The TENS, also known as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator, is what anybody wants to have, especially those who are in pain. With the size like that of a cell phone, the TENS unit works by delivering mild electric signals through the skin to the nerves and muscles into specific areas where someone experiences pain. All around the world, this type of treatment has become more popular. Some units may be purchased directly over the counter, while some would not a prescription from your physician.
By using the TENS unit, you will be able to ease fatigue syndrome, muscle pain, depression and many more. For sure, this unit will not let you down because even the Food and Drug Administration has approved it to help relieve pain in the arms, lower back, hips and legs.
Test the TENS Unit
You need to test your TENS unit to determine the level of charge that it contains. Before you test your unit, you must make sure that the unit’s 2 knobs are turned off. The first knob is used to control the signals that are sent to your nerves, and the other one is the one responsible for changing the speed of the signals.
Clean the Area for the Electrode Pads
Cleaning is very important to ensure that your TENS unit is functioning very well. The electric pulses tend to be weaker once they get in contact with greasy or oily skin. Other than that, cleaning and sterilizing the area also makes the electrode pads placed very well.
Place the Electrode Patches
The TENS units are battery-operated and use small sticky patches called the electrodes. Because of their small size, they are easy and portable for use anywhere you go. You need to determine the specific areas where the pain is located and stick the electrode patches. For a start, you can use the unit for about 30 minutes at a time thrice or four times a day. Using the unit as often as you like is possible, but remember to take breaks. Aside from that, you should not use it when sleeping during the night.
In treating pain, devices such as the TENS units have already been recognized to be safe. However, you still need to make sure to visit your physician before buying your own unit. Moreover, they will be able to teach you where to particularly place the patches and which settings you must use. It is very important that you know how to properly operate the unit to make sure that it will not cause you any more trouble.
Before placing an electrode patch on your skin, you should coat its bottom with a thin layer of gel. By doing so, it is easier to help the unit’s signals get into your skin and be delivered to your nerve properly. After putting some gel, then the patch is ready to be applied to your body. Place them in specific areas where you feel pain and use medical tape to keep it in place. If you want to stick an electrode in an area that is difficult to reach, it would be better to ask someone to place it for you to make sure that it is placed correctly.
If you have already successfully placed the electrode patches, they can now be hooked to the pin connectors and then hook the pin connectors to the TENS unit. As you turn on the machine, you just have to adjust the knobs slowly and settle on what feels right for you. You may feel a tingling sensation while using the unit, but this is completely normal. It just means that the pulses are on their way to your nerves. If you are going to have another TENS treatment soon, you can just leave the electrodes on your skin. Otherwise, remove them by washing your skin with soap and water. Remember not to use alcohol because it can damage the electrode’s rubber.
Store the Unit in a Safe Place
When your TENS unit is not in use, you have to store it in a safe place so that your electrodes will be safe and will not get easily damaged. However, you cannot expect your unit to last a long time, especially if you have multiple TENS treatments. Over time, it may need additional care, or it could need replacement. Aside from the unit itself, the electrode pads could also need replacement such as when they do not stick very well anymore. To increase the lifeline of your unit, you can store it in a place where it will not be sat on or bumped over. One way of securing the TENS unit is to put it in a case to prevent the occurrence of unnecessary damage.
