Who Needs a Massage the Most? Let us find out
No matter who provides it, a rubdown can be a godsend at times. It could be your partner giving you a soothing back rub or a simple hand massage in the course of a manicure. Getting a massage does not only make you feel good, but it also benefits your overall health.
Now that we are all aware of how beneficial a massage is to an overworked body, the only question is who needs a massage the most? Is as much as anyone needs a massage, there are some of you who need it more than others. It could be for one reason or another.
Getting a massage at the right time that your body needs it maximizes the benefits, as well as giving you an exhilarating experience. For this, I have prepared this post to help you decide whether you are due to visit a massage pro anytime soon. As a disclaimer, this list is in no apparent order.
1. Those Who Are Stressed or Anxious
An overwhelming amount of research shows that receiving a massage greatly reduces psychological stress markers. One of these studies done in Korea on patients going for a cataract surgery shows that a five minutes’ massage significantly confirmed this notion.
Receiving a hand massage for the five minutes reduced heart rates, blood pressure, and stress hormones in these patients. By reducing the cortisol hormone that is associated with stress makes not only patients but any other person calmer.
So, if you have a date planned, going for an interview, you have a big game coming up, then a massage would be good for you. These occasions tend to make people anxious or stressed out. Visiting a masseuse, therefore, helps to ease the tension in your mind and muscles.
2. If You Feel Bodily Pains
Receiving a body massage basically works in the same way as a painkiller. It is even more effective when the masseuse gets their bare hands on your skin. Studies done by neurologists particularly in the brain activities of individuals show a correlation.
A barehanded massage directly on your skin activates the part of your brain that a painkiller activates when relieving you of pain. The good thing with a massage is that you do not need a prescription for one.
You can even arrange for a localized massage session. When you feel pain in a certain area, ask your partner (or someone else) to use their fingers to press down on the pain area (knot). Use medium pressure and let them rub gently. Hold the pressure for about 10 seconds. You should feel better.
3. Those Feeling Headaches
If you are feeling a headache, then one of the ways of getting relief is to receive a neck massage. Headaches are triggered by a lot of things such as restricted blood flow to the brain at the neck area. This type of a headache can be fended off through a massage.
Visiting a neck masseuse boosts blood flow through the neck, alleviating the headache in the process. In other instances, getting two massage sessions twice a week reduces the severity of headaches in those who suffer from chronic headaches.
Tight muscles around the neck, shoulders, head and back do initiate tension headaches. Just as for those feeling pains, those feeling tension headaches need to schedule for a massage session to promote a healthier posture. Massage therapy would also work for people experiencing migraines.
4. If You Have Insomnia or Don’t Get Enough Sleep
If you have been having a hard time getting some snooze time of late, then you are one of those who needs massager the most. A massage increases a type of waves called delta waves in your brain. It is these waves that are associated with deep sleep.
Sleep deprivation is something you do not want to experience. It leads to hypertension, weight gain, altered immune functions or even mood changes. Sleeping time is when you need to recover after an exhausting day.
One type of massage that is proven to help you sleep better is facial massage. It reduces blood pressure around your face, creating a sleepiness sensation as a result. A foot massage works too, but not as a facial massage.
Next time before you sleep, ask your partner for a little foot rub to help you sleep better. Or better still, you could get yourself a foot massager in case you don’t have anyone to help you out.
5. You Experience Chronic Inflammation
Usually, inflammation occurs as a result of an infection or an injury. This reaction is done by the body to protect itself from further infections. It is the occurrence of chronic inflammation that you need to be wary of. And this is where a massage therapy steps in to fend off your pains.
An article published in the Journal of Science Translational Medicine found on a study on the effects of massage on inflammation confirms this benefit. Inflammations are caused by a compound called cytokines. This study found out that a massage curbs its production.
In a different study, it is evident that massage therapy decreases body inflammations triggering genes that naturally reduces body swelling. For this purpose, you need a deep tissue massage that kneads out the knots. As a result, protein production increases for quicker muscle recovery.
6. Those Who Spend Long Hours Typing On a Keyboard or Texting
Massage therapy is a necessity for those who spend long hours typing on a keyboard. Or if you a serial texter, then you need a body massage session. The muscles located on your forearm which are responsible for controlling your arm movements are subjected to too much strain in this case.
If you find yourself in this scenario, then you need a TLC session to relieve the ropey and tense muscles. These symptoms usually signal an impeded blood flow in the muscles. To get a quick fix, you can perform a massage like manoeuvre on your own or visit a masseuse.
With the thumb under your arm, grab a forearm. Dig the finger pads into the tight muscles like a claw as you rake the fingers into the muscles. If your hamstrings feel tight, you could also use the same technique to get some amazing relief.
7. Those Who Feel Moody
There are certain days when you feel terrible about anything. It could be a specific day of the week (especially Monday), or it could be raining outside. When you find yourself in these situations, then you definitely qualify for a massage.
A study done in 2005 reveals that massage therapy escalates the amount of serotonin by about 28 per cent. This neurotransmitter is linked with the happiness sensation in humans. Another neurotransmitter, dopamine increases by 31 per cent. This transmitter is thought to arouse motivation in people.
When you combine these effects of getting a massage, then your day could become better than it currently is.
8. If You Have Never Had One (In A Long While or Never)
Massages work best for you if you receive it regularly. Most of the massage professionals recommend that you get a massage at least once a month or more regularly if you are rehabilitating an injury.
However, if you haven’t done so in a long while, then it could be time you did it. More so if you fall into any of the categories mentioned above. I think the massage professionals themselves would also fall into this category.
I have rarely seen them get massages themselves in as much as they provide it to others. Get a massage on a regular basis to maintain a healthy functioning system. To ease your worries, look for a handheld massager to provide you with the comfort you need whenever you need it.
I think you should not wait until some condition forces you to have a massage. Insomnia, waking with a stuffy nose, shoulder, neck or back pains, headaches or inflexibility should not be the reason to look for a masseuse.
Always create time out of your busy schedule and have a massage therapy session at least once a month. In this way, you would be keeping these conditions at bay instead of trying to sooth them.
